Perhaps the single most useful check is the roll-off test. Grab the rear edge and try to push the helmet forward off your head. It should stay put.

Treating Ventilation As a Cold-Weather Problem

Riders close every vent on the first cold morning. Then they wonder why their goggles fog by mid-morning.

Sweat is the actual enemy. You generate heat constantly on a sled, especially on rough trails where you stand and shift your weight. That moisture has to leave the helmet somehow.

Riding a Helmet Well Past Its Useful Life

Dropping a helmet on a garage floor counts. So does a low-speed tip-over where your head hits the ground. The protective liner compresses once, and it does not recover.

Padding is a separate matter. Sweat and salt stiffen liners over a season, and stiff padding changes how a helmet sits on your head. Removable, washable liners and cheek pads help, though even those wear out eventually.

Forgetting That Fit Changes After Break-In

A helmet that feels perfect in a shop rarely feels identical in February.

Cheek pads give slightly during the first several hours of riding. Crown padding gives much less. That means a helmet which feels snug at the cheeks on day one usually settles into something comfortable, while one that pinches at the crown stays uncomfortable.
